Hawaiian Air - Pet Information

Does the airline allow pets: Yes

Hawaiian Airlines transports dogs, cats and household birds, but there are conditions and restrictions that apply whether you are traveling with your pet or trained service animal.

We advise you to read and understand the conditions and restrictions thoroughly prior to traveling with an animal.

Does the airline allow pets as carry-on: Yes

We accept dogs or cats as pets traveling in the cabin, and are happy to accommodate your pet in our pressurized, temperature-controlled cabin compartment of our aircraft following the policies outlined below.

Household birds will not be accepted for carriage in the cabin, but may be accepted as checked baggage. For information regarding pets traveling as checked baggage please visit our Pets Traveling as Checked Baggage page.

To ensure the health and safety of your pet, web, kiosk and mobile check-in will be restricted to allow for inspection of your animal, its carrier and applicable documents by our Hawaiian Airlines personnel. We ask that you check in one hour prior to general check-in and have all applicable documents on your person to help expedite the check-in process. A pet accommodated in the cabin of the aircraft will not count towards your carry-on baggage allowance.

Due to floor space limitations, pets traveling in cabin will not be accepted in our First Class cabin on all North America flights, and pets will not be accepted for travel in the cabin in any class of service on flights to/from New York, Boston, Orlando or Austin. They will also not be accepted on International routes (including Pago Pago).

  • Allowed in the main cabin on flights between Hawaii and North America (except on JFK, BOS, MCO, and AUS routes)
  • Pets in the cabin are not allowed to or from JFK, BOS, MCO or AUS
  • Pets are not allowed in First Class
  • Allowed on Neighbor Island travel between Hawaiian Islands
  • Pets are not accepted in the cabin or as checked baggage for International travel to/from Hawaii as well as Pago Pago to/from Hawaii

  • The pet will be loaded in the baggage compartment of your passenger flight.
  • You may book your pet as checked-in baggage at the same time you make your own flight reservations. (Subject to applicable fees and space availability. You may call our Reservations Department at 1-800-367-5320 to make your arrangements.)

Does airline have an embargo: Yes

In general pets can be shipped as cargo using Hawaiian Air Cargo as long as the temperature does not exceed 85 degrees F or is below 20 degrees F.

Kennel / Pet Carrier Information

Hawaiian Airlines complies with the United States Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act (AWA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) requirements.

You are responsible for obtaining a kennel for your animal, as we do not provide animal kennels. All animal kennels are subject to inspection and approval by Hawaiian Airlines before your animal is accepted for travel.

CARRY-ON KENNEL REQUIREMENTS - Carriers must be soft-sided and leak proof. - The carrier must be large enough to allow the animal to sit, stand upright, turn and lay down in a natural position. - The animal is required to stay in its carrier while in the terminal and onboard the aircraft. - Animal carriers are prohibited from bulkhead, emergency exit rows and rows adjacent to emergency exit rows. - The carrier must be stowed under the seat directly in front of the guest. - The carrier must not exceed the following dimensions in inches: - Length 16 in. X Width 10 in. X Height 9.5 in. - The animal and the carrier may not exceed 25 pounds total. - If an animal and carrier exceeds 25 pounds total when weighed, the pet will not be accepted for travel in the cabin of the aircraft and may be accepted as checked baggage.

Hawaiian Airlines will accept:

  • One (1) adult dog or cat to occupy a single carrier; or two (2) puppies or kittens of the same breed or litter provided they are at least eight (8) weeks old and not more than six (6) months old. The total weight of the animal(s) and the container must not exceed 25 pounds total.

Hawaiian Airlines reserves the right to require documentation from the animals treating veterinarian to determine the animals’ age and eligibility to travel.

CHECKED BAGGAGE KENNEL REQUIREMENTS You are responsible for obtaining a kennel for your animal, as we do not provide animal kennels. All animal kennels are subject to inspection and approval by Hawaiian Airlines before your animal is accepted for travel.

  • Kennels must be in a condition that appears safe and can secure the animal, be hard sided (e.g. wood, metal or a material of comparable strength), leak proof, designed to prevent escape and have adequate handholds to enable lifting without coming into contact with the animal.
  • The kennel must be large enough to allow the animal to sit, stand upright, turn and lay down in a natural position.
  • The kennel must contain absorbent material (blanket, towel, shredded paper, absorbent pad).
  • The animal must not be leashed or restrained while in their kennel.
  • We accept the following types of kennels. The total weight of your kennel (including the animal) must not exceed the maximums below:

ANIMAL KENNEL WEIGHT AND SIZE LIMITATIONS

If an animal and kennel exceeds the maximum size or weight limitations, the pet will not be accepted for travel as checked baggage and will be referred to our Cargo department.

Animal Limits Per Kennel

  • One (1) adult dog or cat to occupy a single kennel; or two (2) puppies or kittens of the same breed or litter provided they are at least eight (8) weeks old and not more than six (6) months old.
  • Two (2) adult household birds to occupy a single kennel; or two (2) household birds of the same breed providing they are at least 2 weeks (14 days).

Hawaiian Airlines reserves the right to require documentation from the animals treating veterinarian to determine the animals’ age and eligibility to travel.

Documentation Requirements

ANIMAL HEALTH CERTIFICATES

Hawaiian Airlines requires animals to travel with an animal health certificate, depending on their route. You are responsible for obtaining an animal health certificate from your animal’s treating veterinarian, prior to the date of travel as follows:

  • Travel within the State of Hawaii: No animal health certificate required
  • Travel between Hawaii and North America: Dated within 14 days prior to arrival

For any direct flights from North America to LIH, OGG, or KOA, in addition to a valid health certificate, a valid Neighbor Island Inspection Permit from the Hawaii Department of Agriculture is also required.

Please note that if your pet arrives at HNL Quarantine from outside Hawaii after 4:30 PM HST, it may not be released by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture on the same day and may need to remain in quarantine overnight.

Can I use the same health certificate for my return flight?

Yes, if it is dated within 14 days of arrival at your destination. (You may still be able to use the same health certificate if it less than 30 days old, depending on your destination.)

  • If you are returning to Hawaii, you must obtain a new health certificate if it is dated more than 14 days from your return flight’s arrival date.
  • If you are returning to the U.S. Mainland, you must obtain a new health certificate if it is dated more than 30 days from your return flight’s arrival date.

Note: To qualify, return flights must be booked as part of a single roundtrip reservation.

Temperature Restrictions

We will not accept your pet for transport if the environmental conditions pose a risk to the safety of your pet.

The local temperature at your origin, destination, or connection airport must not be above 85F / 29C during transport and must not be below 20F / -7C.

For temperatures between 20F / -7C and 45F / 7C, a current acclimation certificate from the animal’s veterinarian dated within 10 days of travel is required.

Airline Fees

The following fees will apply for carry-on:

  • Travel within the State of Hawaii: $35.00 USD
  • Travel between Hawaii and North America: $125.00 USD

The following fees will apply for checked baggage pets:

  • Travel within the State of Hawaii: $60.00 USD
  • Travel from Hawaii to North America: $225.00 USD
  • Travel from North America to Hawaii: $225.00 USD
