Pet Travel & Shipping Information

Emotional support animals are no longer accepted as service animals; pets may travel under Alaska’s pet policy if they meet all requirements.

Pets allowed?: Yes

Alaska Airlines welcomes pets in the cabin, checked baggage compartment, and cargo. Dogs, cats, rabbits, and household birds may travel in-cabin. A wider variety of small domesticated animals (including ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, non-poisonous reptiles, pot-bellied pigs, and tropical fish) may travel as checked baggage when conditions permit. For larger pets or unaccompanied shipments, use Alaska Air Cargo's Pet Connect service.

Pets as carry-on?: Yes

Allowed animals: Dogs, cats, rabbits, and household birds.

Passenger requirements: You must be at least 18 years old to travel with a pet in the cabin.

Pet age: Dogs and cats must be at least 8 weeks old and fully weaned.

Carrier limits: - You may bring 1 pet carrier per passenger. - You may travel with 2 pet carriers in the main cabin only if you purchase the adjacent seat. - Up to 2 pets of the same species and similar size may share one carrier if both fit comfortably with no body parts protruding.

Cabin capacity: - First Class: 1 pet carrier total per flight. - Main Cabin: Up to 5 pet carriers per flight. - Availability varies by flight. Reserve early.

Baggage allowance: Your pet carrier counts as your carry-on bag. You may bring either a pet carrier plus a personal item, or a pet carrier plus one standard carry-on bag.

Seating restrictions: You may not sit in an exit row, bulkhead, or any seat with an airbag seat belt when traveling with a pet.

During the flight: Your pet must remain fully inside the closed carrier (head and tail included) in the boarding area, Alaska Lounges, during boarding and deplaning, and throughout the flight. The carrier must be stowed under the seat in front of you during taxi, takeoff, and landing.

Pets as checked baggage?: Yes

Allowed animals: Cats, dogs, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, household birds, non-poisonous reptiles, pot-bellied pigs, rabbits, and tropical fish. Rules vary by species and destination.

Pet age: Dogs and cats must be at least 8 weeks old and fully weaned.

Same-kennel rules: - One adult dog or cat (6 months or older) per kennel. - One puppy or kitten (8 weeks to 6 months) over 20 lbs per kennel. - Two puppies or kittens (8 weeks to 6 months) of comparable size, each weighing 20 lbs or less, may share one kennel.

Weight limit: Pet plus kennel may weigh up to 150 lbs combined. If your pet and kennel weigh 151 lbs or more, contact Alaska Air Cargo (Pet Connect) for assistance.

Check-in requirements: - Check in at least 1 hour before departure, but no more than 2 hours early. Airport-specific procedures may apply. - You must travel on the same flight as your checked pet. - Pets are typically available for pick-up in baggage claim about 30 minutes after arrival.

Food and water: - Offer food and water to your pet within 4 hours of check-in. - Provide enough food and water for the entire journey. - For connections of 4 hours or more, you must request access to your pet at the connection city to offer additional food and water, then recheck your pet. - A Pet Check record will be completed at check-in certifying food and water were offered.

Connecting flights: Alaska does not transfer checked pets to other airlines. You must claim your pet and recheck with the connecting carrier.

Important: Brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds are NOT accepted as checked baggage due to breathing risks. See the Restrictions section for the full breed list. These breeds may still fly in-cabin if the carrier fits under the seat.

Pets as cargo?: Yes

Alaska Air Cargo accepts pets through its Pet Connect service.

When to use cargo: - Your pet is too large for checked baggage (over 150 lbs combined with kennel). - You need to ship your pet unaccompanied. - Your itinerary is not eligible for checked-pet acceptance.

Booking: Advance booking required. Drop-off and pick-up at cargo facilities where Pet Connect service is available.

Pricing: Rates vary by route, size, and weight (airport-to-airport). Contact Alaska Air Cargo or Pet Connect directly for a quote.

Important: Brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds are NOT accepted in cargo. Alaska does not accept pets for Cargo or GoldStreak service to or from Mexico.

Airline Embargo Information

Holiday embargo: Pets may NOT travel in the baggage or cargo compartments on Alaska flights numbered 2000–2999 and 3300–3499 during November 15 through January 10. Pets in the cabin are still accepted during this period.

Temperature and weather: Extreme heat and cold can pose serious health risks to your pet. Alaska may decline acceptance for your pet's welfare. To reduce risk: - Choose cooler times of day (early morning or evening) when traveling in summer. - Choose mid-day flights when traveling in winter. - Book nonstop or direct flights whenever possible. - Cold-weather acclimation certificates may be required in very cold conditions.

Alaska does not publish universal numeric temperature thresholds. Contact Alaska for acceptance decisions based on your specific route, date, and airport conditions.

Embargo dates: November 15 - January 10

Documentation Requirements

In-cabin pets (domestic U.S. flights): Alaska generally does not require a health certificate for in-cabin pets on domestic flights. However, your destination state or local jurisdiction may require documentation. Verify requirements for your destination before travel.

Checked baggage and cargo pets: A health certificate is required for pets traveling in the baggage or cargo compartments on Alaska Airlines (including Horizon and SkyWest operated flights where applicable). - Issued within 10 days of your initial travel date. - May be valid for up to 30 days for return travel when booked on the same reservation (verify timing with your veterinarian and Alaska).

International and Hawaii: Additional documentation is required. See the International Travel section below.

Food and water certification: For checked baggage, you will complete a Pet Check record at check-in certifying that food and water were offered to your pet within 4 hours of check-in.

Restrictions

Brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds: Short-nosed dogs and cats are NOT accepted in the baggage compartment or cargo due to increased breathing risk. These breeds may still travel in-cabin if the carrier fits under the seat.

Restricted dog breeds (and mixes): American Pit Bull, American Staffordshire Terrier, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Brussels Griffon, Bulldog (all breeds), Bull Terrier, Chow Chow, Dutch Pug, English Bulldog, English Toy Spaniel, French Bulldog, Japanese Boxer, Japanese Pug, Japanese Spaniel, Mastiff (all breeds), Pekingese, Pug, Shih Tzu, Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Restricted cat breeds (and mixes): Burmese, Exotic Shorthair, Himalayan, Persian.

If you have a short-nosed breed or mix, confirm acceptance with Alaska before booking.

Aircraft restrictions: On flights operated by Alaska's Airbus fleet, pets may not travel in First Class and may not be accepted in the baggage compartment (these aircraft do not have heated cargo space suitable for pets). Check your aircraft type by flight number.

Seating restrictions: Passengers traveling with in-cabin pets may not sit in exit rows, bulkhead seats, or seats equipped with airbag seat belts.

Emotional support animals (ESAs): ESAs are no longer recognized as service animals under U.S. Department of Transportation rules. ESAs may only travel as pets under Alaska's standard pet policy and fees if they meet all pet travel requirements. Qualified service animals are accepted under Alaska's separate service animal policy.

Notes

  • Emotional support animals (ESAs) are not accepted as service animals under U.S. DOT rules. Qualified service dogs are accepted per Alaska’s service animal policy.
  • Sedation is not recommended; effects at altitude can be unpredictable. Consult your veterinarian before considering tranquilizers.
  • Book early—pet space is limited—and arrive at the airport early to complete the required pet acceptance steps.
  • Always check current policies and weather/embargo notices before you travel.

International Travel

General rule: Only dogs and cats are accepted for travel between the U.S. and international destinations on Alaska Airlines. Confirm all country-specific import requirements (microchip, import permit, rabies vaccination, health certificate, parasite treatments, and tests) well in advance with destination authorities and USDA APHIS.

Hawaii: Alaska accepts only cats and dogs to Hawaii. Hawaii has extremely strict Department of Agriculture pre-arrival requirements and quarantine programs. You must complete all required steps and submit forms before your pet will be accepted into the state. Review Alaska's "Pets traveling to Hawaii" page for detailed instructions.

Canada: Dogs and cats accepted. Bring appropriate vaccination documentation (rabies certificate) and be prepared for inspection per Canadian regulations.

Mexico: - Dogs and cats accepted (subject to Mexican SENASICA inspection). - Bedding similar to straw or cloth is restricted. Use absorbent pads or shredded paper. - Only one day's worth of food may travel with your pet. - Arriving with 3 or more pets may trigger commercial importation procedures and substantial additional import fees from SENASICA. This may require customs broker handling on arrival. - Alaska does NOT accept pets for Cargo or GoldStreak service to or from Mexico.

Health certificates for international travel: International destinations and Hawaii require health certificates and additional documentation. Work with your veterinarian and contact the destination country's agriculture or customs authority well in advance of travel. USDA endorsement may be required for some countries.
