Incident 1 Carrier: Alaska Airlines Flight: 5 (Washington, DC to Los Angeles, CA) Date of incident: Monday, March 31, 2014 Time of incident: 12:10 PM PT Description of animal (including name): A 4-year-old, male Border Collie dog, named Ninja. Narrative description of incident: In Washington, DC, prior to boarding, one of two dogs being shipped by the same traveler, escaped its kennel while in the baggage makeup area, by chewing out the side of its kennel. The dog ran off and was later found in good condition, with scrapes to its paws. Alaska Airlines sent the dog to a local veterinarian for an exam and paid for those charges. Narrative description of the cause of the incident: A dog escaped its kennel, by chewing out the side of its kennel, and was captured that same day. There is no evidence to suggest that the airline’s handling contributed to the animal’s injury. Narrative description of any corrective action taken in response to the incident: No action required.
