April 2009 Report

April 2009 Airline Pet Travel Report

Pet incidents for the month of February, 2009.

American Airlines reports the death of a cat in San Juan, Puerto Rico arriving from St Croix U.S. Virgin Islands on their inter-island carrier Executive Airlines. Little additional information is given and at the time of this writing there are no necropsy results.

Delta Airlines reports the loss of a 10 year-old cat as it was being delivered to the aircraft at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in Baltimore, MD. The ramp driver noticed that the kennel was empty. It was determined that the accepting agent failed to follow Delta procedures and secure the kennel with resealable zip ties.

A reminder to always use zip-ties to secure the kennel halves and kennel doors.

Delta and United Airlines each recorded 1 incident. Deaths fell sharply from 8 in 2024 to 3 in 2025, though the year closed on a somber note with the December death of Meli, a three-year-old Golden Retriever, on an Alaska Airlines flight in Seattle.
