September 2021 Airline Pet Travel Report

For this repot we have two injuries on Alaska Airlines and one death on Hawaiian Airlines.

Alaska Airlines Flight 393 had a cat, named Lucifer, escape from his kennel prior to loading onto the aircraft at JFK. The cat was found alive on the ramp with an injured leg and scrapes on its paws. The kennel was found defective as he was able to push his way out of the side vent to escape. We wish you a speedy recovery, Lucifer!

Alaska Airlines Flight 3483 had a dog, named Bella, also escaped from her kennel prior to loading onto the aircraft at Seattle Airport. She escaped her kennel and ran across tarmac, jumped a small fence on to the main road and was hit by a car. Bella was found on the road injured and bleeding. Owners were called and Bella was taken to the vet. The vet reported Bella's jaw was injured, nails broken and pads on feet scraped. We wish you a speedy recovery, Bella!!

Hawaiian Airlines Flight 187 from Kona to Honolulu transported a two-year old pit bull, eventually destined for Seattle but upon arrival in Honolulu, Hawaiian employees observed the pit bull to have labored breathing. The pit bull was taken to a separate room for closer examination and the pit bull was observed to be struggling with breathing and unresponsive. Hawaiian employees contacted a veterinarian and arranged for transport to the veterinarian’s office, but the pit bull expired before he could be transported. With Owner’s authorization, a necropsy was performed and report provided to Owner as well as cremated remains of the pit bull. This incident is pending investigation. Hawaiian Airlines is conducting an investigation of the incident and as part of such investigation will be reviewing its policies, procedures and handling of the pit bull to determine whether any corrective action is warranted.
